One Traveler, One Mission: the Real Midwest
I'm Scott Murray -- a healthcare IT professional from San Diego who fell in love with the American Midwest. What started as a few road trips through Illinois and Missouri turned into years of exploring every corner of the heartland -- from Chicago deep-dish to Kansas City barbecue, from the shores of Lake Michigan to the bluffs of the Ohio River Valley. I built Discover Midwest because I wanted a travel resource that treats this region with the depth and honesty it deserves.
Travel has always been my escape from the rat race -- and honestly, I enjoy the planning almost as much as being there. Researching destinations, mapping routes, finding that perfect neighborhood restaurant. The Midwest captured me because it's the most underrated travel region in America. People fly over it to get to the coasts, never realizing what they're missing.
I've explored 40+ countries, but some of my best travel memories are from the heartland -- watching the sun set over the Gateway Arch, eating my way through Chicago's neighborhoods, catching a baseball game in Cincinnati, exploring the craft beer scene in Milwaukee. Every city has its own personality, its own food culture, its own story.
I'm not a travel blogger. I work in healthcare IT. But the Midwest keeps pulling me back, and I finally decided to put everything I've learned into something useful -- a site with real local knowledge, honest prices, and an AI trip planner that builds itineraries from actual travel experience. It's the resource I wished existed when I started exploring this region.
How It Started
Early trips through Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana. Chicago was the gateway -- deep-dish pizza, the lakefront, the L train. But it was the smaller cities that surprised me most.
Kansas City barbecue trails. Cincinnati chili. Milwaukee's Third Ward. Minneapolis craft breweries. Every trip revealed another layer. I started documenting prices, routes, and recommendations obsessively.
The site I always wanted to build finally becomes real -- with destination guides, an AI trip planner, and the kind of honest, detailed coverage the Midwest deserves. Not recycled content. A real guide built by someone who actually goes there.
The People Behind the Pages
Healthcare IT professional by day, Midwest travel enthusiast by every other waking moment. Based in San Diego, CA. Has explored 40+ countries but keeps coming back to the heartland. Enjoys the trip planning almost as much as the travel itself. Built this site because the Midwest deserves better travel coverage than "Top 10 Things to Do in Chicago."
Born in the Philippines and based in San Diego. Cultural explorer who brings warmth, personal storytelling, and food expertise to Discover Midwest. The one who discovers the Polish deli in Chicago that's been there since 1962, finds the jazz venue in Kansas City that locals keep secret, and brings the human dimension that makes the heartland feel like home even on your first visit.
What You'll Never Find Here
I built this site because I got tired of Midwest travel content that's either a press trip recap or a sponsored hotel review dressed up as honest advice. Discover Midwest exists because I wanted the resource I wished I had.
